Participated as an instructor in the transfer of technology program for CEA/CWC/GSI (Govt. of India) hydropower engineers under the World Bank loan-training in Civil/Geotech Design Module in USA and India (1996 & 1998).

Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, USA.

Performed design of alternately reinforced overlapping caisson wall and rock anchors. Reviewed geotechnical information (soil parameters, boring logs, lateral loads) and developed design criteria. Investigated stability of the left bank during the construction of the new lock. Performed non-linear finite element analyses of the proposed tieback wall, finite element seepage analysis to estimate seepage quantities and uplifts during excavation (1997).

 

Seoul-Incheon Navigation Project, Korea

Client: Korea Water Resources Corporation, Seoul, Korea.

Performed design and analysis of the pile foundation for the navigation locks. Investigated stability of the locks. Performed design of rock bolts to stabilize rock wedges. Performed seepage analysis to estimate flow into excavations and to estimate flow through the dikes. Perfomed design of sheetpile cutoff walls under the west lock.

Ground Water Modeling & Seepage Analysis

Rehabilitation of Huffman Dam, Germantown Dam, Lockington Dam, Englewood Dam and Taylorsville Dam of Miami Conservancy District, Ohio

Lead Engineer/Project Engineer. Performed foundation characterization and finite element seepage analyses of the five dams under various flood conditions to check the stability of the dams.  Reviewed the capacity of the existing downstream relief wells.  Investigated different seepage control measures to stabilize the dams under OPF (1992- 1999).

Design of Keenleyside 150MW Powerplant Project, British Columbia, Canada

Client: Columbia Basin Power Company, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Estimated the quantity of seepage into the power channel and reviewed its stability during construction and operation.  Evaluated different seepage control schemes for the channel during its construction (1998).

 

Maranon-Huanuco Hydroelectric Project, Lima, Peru

Client: Illinova Generating Company, Lima, Peru

Reviewed the borehole data and site characterization of the project site. Investigated uplift pressures, seepage gradients and seepage quantity under the proposed spillway (1998).

 

Pisgah Dam, Fergus Falls, Minnesota, USA

Performed finite element seepage analyses. Existing piezometer readings were used to calibrate the FEM model.  The uplift pressures under the powerhouse were estimated based on the results of the analyses (1996).

Participated in the design of the 70 meters high RCC dam.  Responsible for the review of the seismicity of the region, determination of design ground motion and dynamic analysis of the dam.  The dynamic stresses from the analyses were used in the design of the upstream intake structure and in the design of the bedding mix for the RCC dam (1998).

Dynamic Finite Element Analysis of Retaining Walls

Bradbury Dam (Cachuma Dam), Santa Barbara, CA.

Client: U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Denver, Colorado, USA.

Responsible for the dynamic finite element analyses of the spillway retaining walls.  The initial numerical results were compared with the centrifuge test results (performed by Univ. of Colorado at Boulder) as a part of the verification of the numerical code used in the study (1994).

Reviewed the design of the cellular cofferdam, which will be used as a platform for a 905-ton crane during construction of the diversion tunnel (1998).

Participated in the design of cellular cofferdam.  Developed excavation plan and instrumentation program to monitor the cofferdams (1995-1996).

 

Safe Harbor Skimmer Wall Design, Pennsylvania, USA.

Client: Safe Harbor Water Power Corp.

Performed design of the foundation for the piers atop a levee.  The piers will be supported by three end bearing steel pipe piles filled with concrete.  The piers will be subjected to large lateral loads due to impact of ice, waves and lateral loads during earthquake (1997).

Client: Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC)

Performed foundation design of a building and appraisal of an existing marshland near 134th street and Torrence Avenue.  Performed design of anchored sheetpile wall and estimation of foundation settlement of the flushing water intake structure T36-2 (1996).

Lead Geotechnical Engineer. Performed Federal Energy Regulatory Agency 5-year inspection. Responsible for the evaluation of field and laboratory test data, design parameters, stability analyses (1990).

 

Itezhitezhi Dam Project, Zambia

Client: ZESCO, Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Ltd.

Reviewed the existing piezometer record to estimate increase in aquifer pressure in the dam foundation due to proposed raising of the dam crest. Performed feasibility study for raising the dam by 10 meters above the present crest level. The study recommended adding downstream berm to meet the stability criteria (1997).

Neutrinos at Main Injector Project (NuMI), Batavia, Illinois

Client: Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

Senior Geotechnical Engineer.  Performed study to estimate typical range of blasting vibrations at various existing structures adjacent to NuMI tunnel alignment (1999).

 

New Croton Aqueduct, New York

Client: City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection, New York

Reviewed the hydrogeologic condition around the tunnel and possibility of rise in ground water and its effect on the existing structures during pressurization
