RGUKT was an unparalleled dream of creating a technical university for the phenomenal starting annual intake of 6000 rural students nearly same as the total intake of all the 15 IIT’s (the total BTech intake of the 15 IIT’s in 2010 was 6491). Prof Raja Kumar, on the invitation of the GC of RGUKT, took up the challenge realizing it as an opportunity to contribute a great and unique university to the mother land and served as its Founding full-time VC from 3rd Feb 2010 to 17th Jan 2015.

Its realization, starting from scratch (particularly for the engineering programme) to fulfillment of the dream has been attempted by him through unprecedented innovations, creativity, spirited implementation and extreme leadership by leading from the front. The endeavored successfully implemented unique and adventurous innovations include, ICT based blended education despite the strength of 24,000 students, selecting 93% of faculty from the bright IITians, selecting 40% faculty from the other states and ensuring diversity, quality of education equivalent to the best of NIT's even for the huge first batch of 6000 students, implementing the essential features of NEP- 2020 like multidisciplinary education in 2010 itself, venturing and creation of 6000 plus internships, creating drug-free campuses, rising 'Bharat ke Yuva' culture among the students, apart from the others. After four and half years, what could be realized was that the university had an outstanding rise and attained a strong position where the first batch students’ themselves recorded excellent performance, perhaps better than what the best of NIT’s have recorded at national level benchmark competitive examinations like GATE-2014, Public Service Commission selections etc., with no extra coaching. Thus, the end result of the adventure was fulfilling giving an outstanding realization of the near-impossible dream and it was a very gratifying sense of service to the nation and achievement.
