Use of Pre‐NPTEL, NPTEL and other online/video courses like MOOCS towards course work in all programmes, a proposal made by Prof Raja Kumar, Director dt.. 12/08/2015

Please refer to my orientation lecture to all faculty members on the proposed pedagogy for IIT Bhubaneswar. In connection with the same, as an addendum, I would like to propose use of Pre‐NPTEL, NPTEL, our own and other online/video courses including MOOCS towards electives for BTech, MSc and MTech and course work for PhD programme of the institute, when right faculty expertise is not available in full or part of the course. The video courses can be used for part or full course. While it can be extended to all courses, it may be appropriate to limit it to electives for the time being. For implementing the same, setting up of some semi‐electronic class rooms in the institute is essential. The present proposal is to use video courses in the following ways:

  1. We may extend the present limited list of courses available for PhD students to take towards fulfilling their course work requirement, by including all or select ones of the postgraduate level courses from Pre‐NPTEL, NPTEL Video Courses, any on‐line Courses from other IITs and other online/video courses including MOOCS. The DSC of a PhD student may recommend any of these courses (subjected to satisfaction of pre‐requisite courses) towards the PhD course work and the student may be permitted to take the course. The student is expected to go through the course by self under the guidance of a faculty member. The concerned school to which the course belongs to, would assign credits, take the approval of the Dean (AA), assign a teacher to provide guidance including giving class assignments to the student and for performance evaluation (including mid‐semester, end‐semester examinations and Teacher’s Assessment components). The standard of evaluation such courses should be more stringent than a traditional course offered with class room teaching.

This extension would very significantly expand the horizon, scope and the list of courses offered and can significantly benefit a student. Thus, with this extension, the difficulties being faced by the institute now in providing right courses to the PhD students, can be overcome. Registration in to video courses can be accepted irrespective of the number of students opting for a video course unlike in the case of a traditional course, wherein certain minimum number of students (eg. 5 students) is essential for a course to run.

  2. We may extend the present list of elective courses available for our MTech students to opt towards their degree requirement, by including all or select ones of the postgraduate level courses from Pre‐NPTEL, NPTEL Video Courses, any on‐line Courses from other IITs and other online/video courses including MOOCS. Every school may come out with select courses from these resources, assign credits and append to expand the list of electives with the approval of the Senate. The students are allowed to opt and register for an appropriate one of these selected courses against an elective course. The registered students are expected to go through the course work as per the given time table and assigned e‐class room by self under the guidance of a faculty member. The concerned school to which the course belongs to, would assign a teacher to provide guidance including giving class assignments to the students and for performance evaluation (including mid‐semester, end‐semester examinations and Teacher’s Assessment components). The objective of this proposal is to strengthen the academics by expanding the horizon, but not replacement of class room lectures. The standard of evaluation should be stricter than a usual course offered for class room teaching. In fact, scope can be further broadened to include any video course available, to the select list by assigning credits, taking the approval of the Dean (AA) and a student or more can opt for and propose for inclusion. The Department/School can examine the course and include in the list for that semester. Registration in to video courses can be accepted irrespective of the number of students opting for a video course unlike in the case of a traditional course, wherein certain minimum number of students (eg. 5 students) is essential for a course to run.

  3. We may extend the present list of elective courses of different types (own major, breadth and others) available for our BTech and MSc students to opt towards their degree requirement, by including all or select ones of the graduate and postgraduate level courses from Pre‐NPTEL, NPTEL Video, any on‐line Courses from other IITs, and other online/video courses including MOOCS. Every school may come out with select courses from these resources and append to expand the list of electives with the approval of the Senate. The students are allowed to opt and register for an appropriate one of these selected courses against an elective course.
