About the project
Xerox Corporation is sponsoring a research project at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur for research and technology development in the emerging area of mobile applications and services. Mobile phones are increasingly becoming a necessity than a luxury across all markets and the gap between mobile phones and computers is fast narrowing. At the same time, revenues per user are steadily dropping that drive the need for value added applications and services. Mobile users capture, consume and share information between each other in a lot of different
ways including voice, text, data and images, all of which are indicators of their habits and usage patterns.  Such data enables one to provide context, content, and process aware services to mobile phone users that are both valuable to the end user and are revenue generators for the service providers.

This research project explores mechanisms and challenges for providing targeted information and solutions to mobile phone users leveraging two key current trends, namely, predictive analysis of mobile phone user behavior and personalization based on usage patterns. The project would be conducted over a period of 3 years and is headed by Prof P P Chakrabarti  and  Prof. Sudeshna Sarkar from the Dept. of Computer Science.  Leading researchers from Xerox would be interacting closely with the researcher(s) during the course of the project.

Technical areas covered in this project include data mining, predictive analytics, social networking analysis, parallel and distributed computing, mobile computing and multi-agent systems.

The project involves work in data mining, predictive analytics, social networking analysis, parallel and distributed computing, mobile computing and multi-agent systems. The applicants must have interest in doing research on these topics, and must have strong programming and algorithm design skills. Exposure to data mining or distributed computing is desirable.
